Raising your Gifted and Talented Child; the Joys and the Challenges

An information booklet for parents and caregivers of gifted and talented children.
[download here]

Parents/caregivers generally have very specific questions about gifted and talented children. This book provides some answers to questions which were drawn up by parent members of the Gifted and Talented Children’s Association of South Australia and as a result of queries from concerned parents across the state. The answers were written in consultation with parents/caregivers and teachers.

The information in this book can be used as a guide for parents/caregivers
and as a resource for educators and other professionals working with parents/
caregivers.

This booklet was written by:

Janet Farrall, Grad. Dip in Ed. Studies: Teaching Gifted Children.
Ann Matison, Master of Education. C.H.I.P.
Mary Minchin, Grad. Cert in Gifted Education
Wendy Stewart, Master of Gifted Education

Goodbye, Saturday Club

The GTCASA Committee regrets to announce that it will no longer be holding Saturday Club. Since GTCASA began in 1974, Saturday Club has been a progressive part of our association, and we have enjoyed organising events for the children. Unfortunately, lack of numbers within the committee has left us without a Saturday Club organiser, and as our calls for help amongst our membership have gone unheeded, we have deemed it necessary to discontinue these events.

Instead, the committee will be concentrating its efforts on personal development for teachers, and on the imminent Gifted Education 13th National Conference, to be held here in Adelaide on July 11 – 14 at Pulteney Grammar School. It is our hope that this event will enhance the profile of the Association, a result of which may mean an increase in Committee membership.

As an association, we are all too aware of the many issues families face dealing with the joys and challenges raising a gifted child can present. To address these concerns, we  intend to present parent sessions where we will aim to address the following topics: where to educate, how to advocate for a student, etc. More detail on these sessions will be available soon.

Our family social events and outings will still be occurring, with the next games afternoon being held on April 29 at Glenunga International High School between 2pm and 4pm. Bring your favourite games to share!
